Massage Therapy for Neurodivergent Populations: Clinical Strategies for ASD, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Differences

This two-day advanced training equips Registered Massage Therapists with the knowledge, awareness, and adaptable techniques needed to provide safe, effective, and affirming care for neurodivergent patients—including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, sensory processing challenges, and other neurodevelopmental differences. Whether you work with children, youth, or adults, this course offers practical strategies to support regulation, trust, and comfort—without sacrificing clinical effectiveness.

Participants will deepen their understanding of how neurodivergence affects the nervous system, with a focus on sensory processing, communication styles, and co-occurring conditions. You’ll learn how to adapt pressure, pace, positioning, and space to accommodate a wide range of sensory needs, and how to recognize signs of distress or shutdown. We’ll explore the importance of predictable structure, visual and verbal cues, and how to engage with patients who are non-speaking, selectively speaking, or navigating high masking demands.

Through case examples, hands-on learning, and real-world application, you’ll build your capacity to assess and respond to patient needs with greater confidence and clarity. You'll also explore how to design a sensory-informed treatment room, establish consent frameworks that are inclusive and flexible, and collaborate with families and interdisciplinary teams in a way that centres the patient’s autonomy.

This course is grounded in neurodiversity-affirming principles and emphasizes consent, respect, and communication across all levels of function. Whether you're new to working with neurodivergent clients or looking to deepen your approach, you'll leave with concrete tools, current research, and a renewed sense of how massage therapy can meet people exactly where they are.
