Your First Lymphedema Visit in Calgary: What Happens and How We Help

If you’ve been referred for lymphedema treatment—or you’re seeking help on your own—you may be feeling overwhelmed, unsure of what to expect, or just hoping someone will take the time to really listen.

You’re in the right place.
At Same Stars Wellness, we provide clear, supportive care for individuals navigating lymphedema at any stage. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been managing symptoms for years, our team is here to help—and that starts with knowing what your first appointment will look like.

👋 Meet Jennifer Strukoff, RMT

One of our most experienced manual lymphatic drainage therapists, Jennifer Strukoff brings a calm, confident presence to every appointment. She understands the physical and emotional toll that lymphedema can have on a person’s daily life—and she’s passionate about helping people feel seen, supported, and cared for from the very first visit.

💬 What Happens at Your First Appointment?

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect when you visit our clinic for lymphedema support:

1. A Warm Welcome and Space to Share

We begin with a conversation. You’ll be asked about your medical history, current symptoms, recent treatments or surgeries, and how lymphedema is affecting your life. We also invite you to share what you’re hoping to get out of your care—whether it’s pain relief, mobility, education, or just someone who gets it.

2. Gentle, Evidence-Informed Assessment

Our assessments are hands-on but non-invasive. We look at swelling, skin condition, areas of restriction, and how your lymphatic system may be responding to daily stressors like gravity, inflammation, or surgical trauma.

We may also measure affected limbs or assess garment fit if you're already using compression.

3. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

This is the heart of what we do. Jennifer is trained in MLD techniques that use light, rhythmic touch to help stimulate lymphatic flow. It’s calming, precise, and deeply effective. Most people find it soothing—some even fall asleep!

4. Education and Self-Care Tips

You’ll leave your appointment with a better understanding of how your lymphatic system works and how to care for it day to day. That includes:

  • Movement and elevation tips

  • Skin care to reduce infection risk

  • Compression guidance

  • Gentle at-home techniques you can safely try

We’ll also connect you with local resources like Alberta Lymphedema Association and help guide you through AADL garment coverage.

5. Ongoing Support & a Long-Term Care Strategy

Lymphedema is a long game—and we’re here for it. We don’t just book you in and send you off. We create a Personalized, Supportive, and Focused Care Strategy that evolves with you.

Jennifer will discuss follow-up visits based on your symptoms and goals—whether that's every few weeks, monthly, or during flare-ups. We also coordinate care with other practitioners when needed.

💛 You Deserve to Feel Heard, Not Rushed

We know that many people with lymphedema feel dismissed or confused by the healthcare system. At Same Stars, we do things differently. We take the time, we ask the questions, and we treat you—not just your swelling.

Ready to start your care?

Jennifer’s appointments fill quickly, so we recommend booking online or reaching out to our team to find the best time for you.

Let’s get you feeling better—together.
